In anticipo sulle previsioni, Microsoft ha rilasciato la versione finale di Security Essentials (precedentemente conosciuto con il nome in codice di "Morro"), nuovo programma antivirus gratuito che fornisce protezione in tempo reale per il PC di casa contro virus, spyware e altri software dannosi.

Disponibile in otto lingue diverse, tra cui l'italiano, Security Essentials è liberamente prelevabile senza la necessità di operare alcun tipo di registrazione. Durante la fase di installazione il software verifica la presenza di una versione genuina di Windows, unica condizione richiesta per poter utilizzare l'applicativo. Il programma, compatibile con Windows XP, Windows Vista e Windows 7, mira a riconquistare il favore degli utenti dopo lo scarso interesse destato in passato dalla suite Windows Live OneCare, ritenuta eccessivamente pesante e poco ottimizzata per offrire una valida protezione del proprio computer.

L'obiettivo dichiarato di Microsoft è mettere a disposizione un prodotto semplice e leggero che limiti al minimo indispensabile il carico sulla CPU e l'utilizzo della memoria dei PC.
