Google Public DNS è l'ultima novità annunciata dal colosso di Mountain View che completa così la propria presenza online aggiungendo un ulteriore tassello ai propri sistemi. Un browser, un sistema operativo, applicazioni online di ogni tipo, il leader tra i motori di ricerca ed ora anche un servizio di risoluzione per Domain Name System (DNS). Google muove le proprie pedine direttamente dove scorre il sangue della Rete, in quel sistema che traduce i domini in indirizzi IP permettendo all'uomo ed alla macchina di parlare la stessa lingua.

Google ritiene il proprio un intervento necessario, o comunque utile per sviluppare un servizio di risoluzione per Domain Name System più veloce. Ancora una volta, insomma, il gruppo spinge sulla velocità auspicando una esperienza di navigazione quanto più fluida possibile, eliminando ogni latenza ed investendo su tutta la filiera per rendere immediata la risposta agli stimoli provenienti dal navigatore.

Chi ha le capacità minime di elaborazione sulla propria Rete avrà gioco facile a sostituire i DNS in uso per provare la soluzione proposta dai tecnici di Mountain View. Nessun blocco, nessun filtro: la promessa di Google è quella di portare il proprio servizio all'utenza al fine ultimo di migliorare l'offerta, tanto la propria quanto quella concorrente. Google mette in cima ai propri obiettivi, infatti, il perseguimento del risultato: la velocità. Quel che verrà dedotto dall'esperienza, quindi, verrà messo a pubblica disposizione al fine di migliorare le proprie e le altrui performance: questo, almeno, stando ai principi enunciati dal gruppo.

In un apposito documento Google ha spiegato le basi tecniche su cui si baserà il servizio, enunciando anche come e perché il DNS di Mountain View offrirà agli utenti performance migliori rispetto alla media.

Google ha anche previsto una sorta di servizio di supporto per chi non è in grado di configurare da sè il proprio PC. Ecco i numeri da inserire nel pannello di configurazione di rete per sfruttare la nuova opportunità offerta da Google:

• DNS primario: 8.8.8.8
• DNS secondario: 8.8.4.4

Google Public DNS ha già scatenato i commenti da parte di OpenDNS che si vede in qualche modo interessata dalle possibili conseguenze derivanti da un eventuale successo dell'iniziativa Google. Trascurando le affermarmazioni più provocatorie e acide David Ulevitch - fondatore di OpenDNS - ripropone un problema da tempo latente, ovvero il pericolo relativo al possibile monopolio derivante da una totale gestione di una porzione della rete da parte di Google. Infatti, con un minino di immaginazione, tra pochi mesi si avranno netbook dotati di sistema operativo made in Google che per funzionare dovranno accedere alle Web application sviluppate dalla stessa Google, utilizzando anche i DNS gestiti da Mountain View.
